RE (Research) Group

Your RE bargaining team met with the employer on May 15-17, concurrently with central table negotiations. Our work was hampered by uncertainty about ongoing central table negotiations, and we continued to discuss mostly non-monetary issues.

We’re back at the bargaining table from May 16th to May 18th.

The RE Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 at The Hilton Garden Inn & Homewood Suites Ottawa Downtown, 361 Queen Street from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Ottawa time). Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided on site, followed by a Delegates’ dinner in the evening.

In our last update, we gave you a summary of our work during the last bargaining meeting. Find below, a full report on our activities. 

Your RE bargaining team met with representatives of the Treasury Board and management on February 19 to 21.

According to RE bylaw 8.4, each region defined in the By-Laws of the Institute and each component group within the RE Group shall be represented on the Executive by a minimum of one (1) elected member.

The RE Group is pleased to advise you that PIPSC has resolved its policy grievance against Treasury Board concerning your collective agreement right to conference attendance.

In crafting its proposal, the Institute recognized the priority the Government has placed on science and research, their inclusion in decision-making, and strengthening the support for fundamental research. We also recognized the priority it has placed on diversity, gender equity, and young Canadians.

The RE bargaining team met with the employer on November 20 and 21, 2018 to discuss the proposals that had been exchanged on November 16.

As Researchers, it is essential to be able to participate in conferences, not only for our career progression, but to benefit the research program and the reputation of the Government of Canada. We must remember that conference attendance as well as scientific and professional society participation are not ‘training’ or a ‘perk’, but rather a critical part of how we do our work.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, at a celebration to mark the 176th anniversary of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), President Debi Daviau presented the PIPSC Gold Medal Award to Dr. John Percival to recognize his leadership and advancement of geoscience in Canada and internationally.

Fellow members of the AV,CS,NR, RE, SH and SP Groups: Your respective collective agreements stipulate that vacation and compensatory leave earned during the previous fiscal year and outstanding on a certain date (most commonly March 31st) is to be automatically cashed-out.

The deadline for the Employer to process your retroactive pay and all salary adjustments is September 29, 2017. Some, but not all, RE Group members have already received it. In all cases, be assured that the Institute is ready to use every means at its disposal to ensure that you receive the complete, accurate amount you are owed.

On June 1, the RE Group Collective Agreement was signed. We are going to see the first effects on our pay on July 12. The pay of most RE members will be adjusted based on the new hourly rate. There will also be a partial or full retroactive payment.

At the close of the RE Annual General Meeting on June 2nd, your new RE Group Executive took office, as per the Elections Results from the Fall.

On June 1, 2017 the Institute and the employer signed the RE collective agreement.
