Policy on RE Group Commendations
Adopted by the RE Group executive, May 2, 2020
The RE Group executive finds common cause with and values the contributions of PIPSC activists and members of the broader communities of science, labour activism and public service. Each year, the Group may present the RE Group Commendations to deserving recipients in areas such as:
- scientific and research integrity
- working conditions for government researchers
- recruitment of PIPSC volunteers
- evidence-based decision making
- science and research communication
Each year, the Group may present up to three Commendations per recipient category consisting of a plaque or certificate and an additional non-monetary gift whose value may be up to the maximum value in the PIPSC Policy on Constituent Body Allocations. A call for nominations will go out once a year. The executive may establish a committee to consider that year’s Commendations and establish a cutoff for applications it will consider, which will allow no less than 30 days between the announcement to members and the cutoff. The committee may decline to present any Commendations or present more than one, depending on the quantity and quality of the nominations received, but must consider all nominations received since the last cutoff.
The intent of the Commendation is to recognize service to the Group that is outside the scope or categories defined by the PIPSC national awards, but above day-to-day recognition via a certificate.
The group executive may move to present an award based on the recommendations of the committee, and the motions shall be recorded in the group executive meeting or AGM minutes as required by the Institute Policy on Constituent Body Allocations.
Eligibility
Recipients of the award may not be current members of the RE executive at the time of nomination, nor at the time of awarding. Up to three recipients per year may be from each of the following categories:
- RE group member (regular or retired)
- PIPSC staff
- member of the public (not part of the other two categories)
Previous recipients will not be reconsidered for at least five years.
The work being recognized must have been undertaken, ongoing or completed within the last 24 months.
Nominations and criteria
Nominations must be supported by three RE Group members in a manner verified by the committee, and must include details of an achievement or contribution occurring or culminating in the 12 months preceding the nomination as well as a brief citation for use when the award is presented.
Contributions may be as a volunteer in any part of the Institute outside the RE group executive, in research, in public communication, or in going above and beyond the call of duty as a PIPSC staff member. The awards committee should consider the impact of the achievement on the wellbeing of RE members and/or the public good, and shall consider the degree of sustained effort, innovation and integrity shown by the candidate.
