It is with a profound sense of sadness that the Institute informs you of the passing of Harry Walker. Harry died on September 15, 2021, surrounded by family, after a lengthy illness.

OTTAWA, October 5, 2021 — Auditors, forensic accountants, and other tax professionals at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have had enough of wealthy individuals and corporations avoiding taxes.

In 2021, we awarded 36 scholarships worth a total of $56,000. To date, we’ve awarded $1,050,000 in scholarships to 542 students. Thank you to our sponsors. Congratulations to all our laureates.

We have submitted our analysis and recommendations to the new federal Task Force reviewing the Employment Equity Act.  

In May of this year I, like many of us, was deeply saddened by the discovery of the mass grave site in Kamloops, British Columbia at a former residential school. The Canadian residential school system, created by Christian churches and the Canadian government, is a sordid mark on our shared history.

As the union representing the scientists who approved the COVID vaccines, PIPSC welcomes all efforts to increase vaccination coverage in Canada. That includes a vaccine policy that makes vaccines more accessible to our members and accommodates legitimate reasons for which an employee may not be vaccinated.

Samah Henein came to Canada 30 years ago from Egypt with a BA in Commerce to have a better life. She wanted the job security that the public service offered, but also wanted to work somewhere she could learn, grow and have balance in her life. Samah applied as an auditor with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in 2005.

On May 13, 2021, PIPSC President Debi Daviau appeared before the Senate Committee on Social Affairs (SOCI) to provide our feedback on how changes to certain provisions of Bill C-30, the Budget Implementation Act, 2021, may help eliminate the barriers that affect equity-seeking groups in the federal public service.

On May 10, 2021, PIPSC President Debi Daviau appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (OGGO) to discuss the government’s handling of the pandemic’s impact on its employees.

On May 6, 2021 PIPSC President Debi Daviau and Economist Ryan Campbell testified before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) about the fight against tax evasion.

With this new PIPSC initiative, members will be able to access evidence-based research and insight on how their careers are changing. It will recommend relevant and accessible training opportunities to keep members ahead of changes in their jobs.

After 3 years of stalling, the Treasury Board has finally come to the table to begin discussing changes to the Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP).
