P1. Awards

P1.1 NCR Awards Committee

P1.1.1 The NCR Awards Committee shall be responsible for administering the:

NCR “Unsung Hero” Award

NCR Steward of the Year Award

NCR Executive of the Year Award

NCR Citation Award* (name to change)

Making Recommendations to the NCR Executive of PIPSC members who should be nominated for:

a PIPSC Citation Certificate,

an Institute Service Award or

an Institute Life Membership

The Committee may recommend individuals for inclusion in any award consideration without prior nomination.

The Committee may announce runner-ups to the Award and present a suitable award to the runner-ups

P1.2 Steward of the Year – Award of Honour

P1.2.1 Purpose - The steward of the year award honours one steward who has rendered conspicuous service to the Institute and Members at large.

P1.2.2 Eligibility – Candidates must be stewards, at time of Nomination

P1.2.2.1 The members of the Awards Committee must resign from the committee if they are nominated for an award and they wish the nomination to be considered.

P1.2.3 Presentation Ceremonies The announcement of the winner of the award shall normally be made at the Regional Steward Council. The presentation of the award is made to the recipient by the chief steward at the PIPSC Annual General Meeting each year.

P1.2.4 Award Selection Criteria

P1.2.4.1 The Steward of the Year Award is given to a steward of the Institute in the National Capital Region who:

a) has served diligently for at least three years;:

b) has made a substantial contribution to the members of the institute; and

c) has made improvement in the recognition and status of the Institute in the workplace

P1.2.4.2 Such service will usually be rendered through:

d) representation of members

e) efforts and visibility in the workplace,

f) participation in Institute affairs such bargaining, consultations and lobbying

g) participation in the Institutes affairs of constituent bodies such as branches, groups and region.

P1.2.4.3 The Awards Committee will use a points-rating system that sets the weighting of these criteria for each award

a) Work-site achievements – mediation, information, organization, exemplary service and visibility, - 60 of 100 points

b) Service to the Institute - education and creating awareness of the role of PIPSC Stewards in the Work Place; active participation in branches, executives, general Institute activities etc. – 10 of 100 points

c) Service to fellow members - participation in OSH, LMRC etc. - 30 of 100 points

P1.2.5 Nominations

P1.2.5.1 Nominations for the Award shall be in a form as prescribed by the Committee

P1.2.5.2 Nominations should provide sufficient information to enable the committee to make its recommendation.

P1.2.5.3 Nominations may be made at any time, but will be considered annually.

P1.2.5.4 The NCR Secretary shall maintain a current register of the Award recipients.

P1.2.5.5

a) The design of all medals, awards, forms and certificates will be under the direction of the PIPSC.

b) The format of presentation and ceremonies will be under the direction of the Institute.

P1.2.5.6 Exclusion -The Steward of the Year Award shall not be awarded posthumously unless notification of inclusion has been made prior to the candidate’s death.

P1.2.5.7 Nominators will receive a written acknowledgment that the nomination package has been received.

P1.2.5.8 The Awards Committee will review all nominations.

P1.2.5.9 Each nomination will be rated and ranked with all other nominations, based on the selection criteria.

P1.2.5.10 Once the Awards Committee has made its final selection the decision will remain confidential until the chosen awardee is notified by the NCR Chair.

P1.2.5.11 Public announcement of the winner and the award will be made at the NCR Stewards Council.

P1.2.5.12 A public call for nominations will be made by the NCR Chief Steward at least 60 days in advance of the NCR Stewards Council.

P1.3 NCR Executive of the Year award

P1.3.1 Purpose

The purpose of the award is to recognize and promote the outstanding contributions of a PIPSC member active on an executive or in committee work of a PIPSC constituent body in the NCR.

P1.3.2 Eligibility

P1.3.2.1 Candidates must be a PIPSC member in good standing, with a minimum of 5 years of service on a PIPSC constituent body executive. Service need not be continuous, nor in only one executive or committee.

P1.3.2.2 The members of the Awards Committee must resign from the committee if they are nominated for an award and they wish the nomination to be considered.

P1.3.2.3 Sitting Members of the current NCR Executive are not eligible.

P1.3.3 Presentation Ceremonies

The announcement and Presentation of the winner of the award shall normally be made at the NCR Regional Council.

P1.3.4 Criteria

The NCR Executive of the Year is given to a member of the Institute in the National Capital Region who:

h) has served diligently for at least five years on a PIPSC constituent body executive, national or regional committee, or the Regional Executive;;

i) has made a substantial contribution to the members of the institute; and

j) has made improvements in the recognition and status of the Institute in the workplace and/or the region

The Awards Committee will use a points-rating system that sets the weighting of these criteria for each award

d) Work-site achievements – mediation, information, organization, exemplary service and visibility, - 20 of 100 points

e) Service to the Institute - education and creating awareness of the role of PIPSC Stewards in the Work Place; active participation in branches, executives, general Institute activities etc. – 50 of 100 points

f) Service to fellow members - participation in OSH, LMRC etc. - 30 of 100 points

P1.3.5 Nominations

A PIPSC member in good standing can nominate any other PIPSC member.

Nominations shall include a detailed description of the nominee's contributions and achievements as a member of an executive or committee.

Nominations shall be submitted to the Chair of the NCR Awards Committee.

Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year. A public call for nominations will be made by the NCR Chair at least 60 days in advance of the NCR Regional Council.

P1.3.6 Selection Process

The Awards Committee will review all nominations carefully; a recommendation will be made to the NCR Executive. The recommendations and subsequent decision of NCR Executive will remain confidential until the chosen nominee is notified by the NCR Chair or the Chair of the Awards Committee.

P1.4 NCR “Unsung Hero” award

P1.4.1 Purpose

The purpose of the award is to recognize and encourage individual effort on behalf of PIPSC in ongoing or special work, whether publicly or behind the scenes, which is of direct benefit to PIPSC members or organization at the local levels (i.e., Branch or Subgroup level), or for individual members (e.g., action as a Steward).

P1.4.2 Eligibility

P1.4.2.1 Candidates must be a PIPSC member in good standing

P1.4.2.2 The members of the Awards Committee must resign from the committee if they are nominated for an award and they wish the nomination to be considered.

P1.4.2.3 Sitting Members of the current NCR Executive are not eligible.

P1.4.3 Presentation Ceremonies

The announcement and Presentation to the winner of the award shall be an ongoing process during the year. The Chair of the Awards Committee and/or Regional Chair will endeavour to present this award at a time and place of most meaning to the winner. Recognition of the year’s winners shall normally be made at the NCR Regional Council.

P1.4.4 Criteria

The NCR “Unsung Hero” is given to a member of the Institute in the National Capital Region who:

k) has served diligently on a PIPSC constituent body in ongoing or special work;

l) has made a public or behind the scenes contribution to the members of the institute or to PIPSC organizations at the local level, or to individual members in the work place; and/or

m) has made improvements in the recognition and status of the Institute in the workplace and/or the region

P1.4.5 Nominations

A PIPSC member in good standing can nominate any other PIPSC member.

Nominations shall include a detailed description of the nominee's contributions and achievements.

Nominations shall be submitted to the Chair of the NCR Awards Committee.

Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year.

Individuals may be nominated more then once during the year, but shall normally only be recognised once per year.

P1.5 NCR “Citation” award

P1.5.1 Purpose

The purpose of the award is to recognize and encourage individual effort of PIPSC members in ongoing or special achievement, whether publicly or behind the scenes, which is of credit to PIPSC, the community, or the Federal Public Service.

P1.5.2 Eligibility

P1.5.2.1 Candidates must be a PIPSC member in good standing

P1.5.2.2 The members of the Awards Committee must resign from the committee if they are nominated for an award and they wish the nomination to be considered.

P1.5.2.3 Sitting Members of the current NCR Executive are not eligible.

P1.5.3 Presentation Ceremonies

The announcement and Presentation to the winner of the award shall be an ongoing process during the year. The Chair of the Awards Committee and/or Regional Chair will endeavour to present this award at a time and place of most meaning to the winner. Recognition of the year’s winners shall normally be made at the NCR Regional Council.

P1.5.4 Criteria

The NCR Citation is given to members of the Institute in the National Capital Region for:

  • Individual achievement, service, excellence or philanthropy;
  • Overcoming of adversity;
  • Dedication to professionalism;
  • Any other action deemed of credit to PIPSC, the Federal Public Service or the Community.

P1.5.5 Nominations

A PIPSC member in good standing can nominate any other PIPSC member.

Nominations shall include a detailed description of the nominee's contributions and achievements.

Nominations shall be submitted to the Chair of the NCR Awards Committee.

Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year.

Individuals may be nominated more then once during the year, but shall normally only be recognised once per year.
