As healthcare professionals, we are committed to care, dignity, and compassion – not only for those we serve, but also for each other. Our union reflects those same values: respect, inclusion, and solidarity. There have been several episodes of behaviour from SH members that are contrary to these values. We have seen microaggressions and overt examples of racism, gender discrimination, disrespect of language duality, disparaging comments made against 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and hostility towards newer members who are trying to get involved.

Our strength is in our differences. Experienced members offer hard-won insights; new members spark change and momentum. That tension makes us better. Inclusion isn’t a nice-to-have: it’s a responsibility. It means building spaces where everyone’s voice matters, not just letting them in the room. It’s about showing up for each other, owning the culture we shape, and making sure no one feels left behind.

Call to action:

We all have a role to play in addressing lateral violence. If you witness conduct at union events that does not reflect our values, we encourage you to speak up – whether for yourself or others. The SH Group Executive is here to support you. No SH member should feel alone in dealing with such issues.
