Regional Director’s Report – November 28, 2018 – Regional Executive Meeting

Home of the PIPSC’s Legacy Cup!

Period: October 19, 2018 – November 27, 2018

Congratulations to all of the successful candidates in the recent PIPSC National Election and a huge thank you to all the individuals who ran for office.   Election results can be found at:  http://www.pipsc.ca/about/governance/elections-information/national/2018-results

The new Board will now start a three-year journey together as a team to advance the various issues of the Institute and serve all of our 58,000 members.  Like any team, we will succeed as a team and we will fail as a team.  I look forward to working with all the returning and new members of the Board.  Let’s get started.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the Regional Executive (Ken and his team), Regional Office (Cynthia!) and our National HQ Office (Julie, Linda and Andrew) who contributed in making the co-hosted BC/Yukon Reception, at the National AGM, such a huge success.  What a great evening consisting of the “sights, sounds and tastes” of the BC/ Yukon Region.  A thank you should also be extended to the various providers with notable mention to Destination BC and Air North!

As you may also know from the AGM, our Region is this year’s winner (2nd time in just three years) of the PIPSC Legacy Cup!  The Legacy Cup is awarded to the Region with the highest contribution rate (per capita) towards the PIPSC Legacy Fund.  This Fund supports scholarships for our members and the community through the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Canada.  Congratulations and thank you to the incredibly generous members from the Region who donated to this important cause.

Board Initiatives

Pursuant to the board mandate letters, my focus over this last period has included:

  • Chair, Executive Compensation Committee (ECC)
  • Board Liaison, Science Advisory Committee and Science:
    • The SAC met in November to begin planning for 2019 and to follow-up on the various on-going science initiatives including:  Science Integrity (SI), Women in Science (WiS), and Science Capacity.  http://www.pipsc.ca/news-issues/scientific-integrity  Efforts have been initiated to start planning for the next three year strategic plan (2020-2023).
  • Assist in the delivery of the key results area of “Model Organization” in areas of governance and strategy planning for the Institute:
    • On-going work on the eight recommendations from the ECC’s memorandum on the ‘Authority of the Executive Committee (EC)’, as approved at the August BOD Meeting.  .
    • Member of PIPSC’s Life Insurance Trust – Preparations continue for a new marketing campaign.

Phoenix information can be found on our website www.pipsc.ca   Members impacted should follow the instructions on the website.  Let me know if you have concerns (contact info below).

Our Region hosted another successful Steward Council on October 19 and 20 at the Delta Burnaby.  Following our new ‘ED Talks’ format (Education and Development) we had over 16 speakers during the day and a half Council.  This included a ‘State of the Union’ by President Daviau; the popular ‘PIPSC Saturday Panel’; and our Friday Evening Entertainment featuring ‘Family Feud’.   Keynote presentations were provided on Personal Resilience by Dr. Marie-Helene Pelletier and the Future of Workplace Pensions by Dr. Kendra Strauss.  Mark your calendars for next year’s Council – October 18 & 19,  2019.

Over the next couple of weeks we will also be hosting our first every Young Professional’s Forum and OSH Training in Vancouver on December 1.  Our schedule of activities for 2019 will be updated on the website shortly http://www.pipsc.ca/regions/bc-yukon

Don’t forget 2019 will be a federal election year so we need to engage and mobilization our members to ensure public services are part of the election conversation.

As always, please consider becoming more involved in your union.  Continue to utilize the incredible power of conversation - members are our best advocates when changing the conversation with family, friends and neighbours over the holiday season!
