Biographical Notes
Sean O’Reilly was elected President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) in November 2024, with his 3-year term beginning on January 1, 2025.
With Maritime roots and a passion for technology, Sean's journey from New Brunswick to the heart of Canada's public service spans over two decades.
Fresh out of St. Francis Xavier University with a Mathematics and Computer Science degree in 1999, Sean jumped into public service as a Junior IT Specialist. His expertise in IT security and project management earned him consistent recognition and advancement – even as government tech services transformed with the creation of Shared Services Canada.
Sean's union journey began in 2002 when he stepped up as a PIPSC steward. Since then, he's remained involved in various ways, from chairing the Finance Committee to serving as Vice-President of the Shared Services Canada Consultation Team. His recent role as Full-Time Vice-President has given him invaluable insights into the challenges facing public service employees across Canada.
Looking ahead, Sean's vision is clear: he wants to build bridges, not walls. He understands that in today's rapidly evolving workplace – with hybrid work models and AI reshaping how we work – public servants need a strong advocate more than ever. He's committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all voices are heard, while fighting for better working conditions, enhanced benefits, and meaningful mental health support.
When he's not championing workers' rights, Sean's life revolves around family time with his partner Fabienne and their two children in Ottawa. A self-proclaimed sci-fi enthusiast and aviation buff, you might also find him immersed in his latest LEGO creation - proof that even union presidents never outgrow their sense of wonder and creativity.
