As part of the conversion from the Computer Systems (CS) Group to the Information Technology (IT) Group, your work description may be reviewed and updated by your employer.

Here are 3 things you should do.

1. Ask for your work description

You have a right to a complete and current statement of your duties. If you have not seen a work description for your position, we recommend you request your work description from your manager.

Include a deadline in your email request. We suggest a date that is 7 to 10 working days after the date you submit your request.

Here’s a template request you can use.

2. Ensure your work description is current and complete

Accurate work descriptions lead to accurate classification and compensation.

If you are on a generic work description (GWD) or standardized job description (SJD), it should cover at least 70% to 80% of your regular duties. If you believe that more than 20% to 30% of your duties are not covered by your generic or standardized description, see step 3 below.

3. Request a review of your work description

If your work description doesn’t cover at least 70% to 80% of your duties, ask your manager for a review of your work description.

One option is an onsite review, also known as a desk audit, which confirms whether or not the duties listed match those you perform. An onsite review can be completed electronically if you are working remotely.
