By the end of this training you will:

  • Appreciate the role of unions and stewards in the workplace;
  • Identify your role and responsibilities as a steward;
  • Develop basic knowledge of the grievance and discipline processes;
  • Engage with other new stewards, experienced stewards and PIPSC staff;
  • Build confidence in order to advise and support members; and
  • Identify strategies to build the union presence in your workplace.

All course materials will be provided at the session; however, please bring a copy of your collective agreement. If you don’t have one, please contact your Human Resource department.

If your steward application has been approved and you are interested in attending the training, please complete the on-line registration form by September 9, 2019. We will not be able to accept late registrations. Priority will be given first to new stewards and remaining spots will be opened to those requesting a refresher. Once the class is full, names will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are received.

On-line training

Basic training now has two equally important components; an online module and in-house facilitation. You will have 1 month prior to the scheduled Basic Training to complete the online module entitled: IPLM- Introduction to PIPSC Labour Movement. Once your attendance has been approved, an online account will be created for you and subsequently, detailed information about accessing the module will be emailed to you. This module must be completed successfully before attending the training.
