BASIC STEWARD TRAINING – ONTARIO REGION FEBRUARY 6 (1 p.m.) 7 and 8, 2020

The Ontario region Basic Steward Training will be held on Thursday February 6, to Saturday February 8, 2020 at the Grand Hotel and Suites in Toronto.

If you are not already a steward, please go to the link below and fill out the form on-line.  Once you are approved as a “steward in waiting”, you will be approved to take the training.

By the end of this training you will have:

  • reflected on the purpose of unions in the workplace and in Canadian society as a whole and on the reasons why they became active in the union;
  • developed a better understanding of their role as Steward;
  • familiarized themselves with the structure and internal functioning of the Institute;
  • been provided with an overview of problem-solving mechanisms available to address issues of concern to the members they represent;
  • identified strategies and approaches to help build the union presence in their respective workplaces.

When your attendance has been approved, you will receive email confirmation from this office.  Please do not book your travel, etc. until you receive your confirmation email.

The Course Schedule:

On-line training

Basic training now has two equally important components; an online module and in-house facilitation.  Once your attendance has been approved, the Education department will send you further instructions about accessing your online account.  You will have up to 1 week before the scheduled Basic Training to complete the online module entitled: IPLM- Introduction to PIPSC Labour Movement.  Please note that if you should not meet this requirement by end of business day, we unfortunately may be obligated to decline your participation and travel arrangements.

 

In Person Training

Thursday February 6, 2020 - 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - lunch – per diem

- 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - registration – Elizabeth room

- 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training – Mt. Pleasant room

Friday February 7, 2020 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training – Mt. Pleasant room

- 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - lunch – Richmond room

- 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - Hospitality suite (TBD)

Saturday February 8, 2020 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training – Mt. Pleasant room

Please ensure that you are available to attend all required hours of training before registering.  Hospitality is not mandatory.

Note:  Experienced stewards are welcome to take Basic training as a “refresher” after 5 years; however, priority will be given to new stewards who haven’t yet received training.
