Recognizing Human Rights Day in Canada: Honouring Our Collective Commitment

Today, we join the national Capital Region Canadians and the global community in recognizing Human Rights Day, a moment to reflect on the universal rights and freedoms that belong to each of us—without exception. This year’s observance carries special importance as workplaces, institutions, and communities continue to navigate change, inequity, and the ongoing work required to ensure dignity and fairness for all.

Within Canada’s public service, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) has long been a leader in advancing human rights, equity, and justice. Through its Human Rights and Diversity Committee, caucuses, and member-driven initiatives, PIPSC has played a pivotal role in pushing for meaningful change—ensuring our workplaces are safer, more inclusive, and more respectful places for everyone.

PIPSC has championed initiatives such as:

Embedding equity and anti-racism principles into collective bargaining and workplace policies

Supporting the creation and development of equity caucuses, including groups representing Women, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, LGBTQ2+, and Persons with Disabilities

Standing firmly with members facing discrimination or systemic barriers

Advocating publicly on national human rights issues affecting federal workers and all Canadians

Human Rights Day is an opportunity to acknowledge this ongoing work—and to recommit ourselves to the values that guide it. Rights are not static; they require vigilance, courage, and solidarity. As members and leaders within PIPSC and NUREG, we each have a responsibility to uphold these principles and to speak out when inequities arise.

Let us honour Human Rights Day by continuing to learn, listen, and lead. Together, we can advance workplaces where dignity is upheld, differences are respected, and every member feels protected and valued.

Human rights matter. Equity matters. Our actions matter.
