Recognizing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3rd

Today, we join communities across National Capital Region, Canada and around the world in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD)—a day dedicated to promoting the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of society.

This year’s observance reminds us that accessibility and inclusion are not optional aspirations. They are fundamental principles that strengthen our workplaces, our public service, and our communities. True inclusion means ensuring that everyone—regardless of visible or invisible disability—can contribute, participate, and thrive.

Within the federal public service, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) continues to champion the rights of members with disabilities through its Human Rights and Diversity Committee and its dedicated Persons with Disabilities Caucus. These member-driven groups work to:

Identify barriers that limit full participation in the workplace

Advocate for improved accommodations, accessibility, and workplace supports

Elevate the lived experiences and voices of members with disabilities

Promote education and awareness to foster more inclusive and respectful workplaces

Bring forward recommendations to strengthen policies and collective agreements

PIPSC has consistently emphasized that accessibility must be embedded in workplace culture—not treated as an afterthought. Through consultations, advocacy, and member engagement, the union continues to push for systemic change that enables all employees to work safely, equitably, and with dignity.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to championing accessibility, addressing systemic barriers, and supporting meaningful inclusion for all members.

Inclusion matters. Accessibility matters. Every member matters.
