Employee and Family Assistance Program

Most PIPSC members with federal, provincial or private employers, have access to an Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).

Your EFAP provides counselling, referral services and sometimes other specialized supports. All services are confidential and free.

It’s okay to not be okay. We’re all facing the ups and downs of life, the EFAP is one more tool to support you. We encourage you to use it!

These programs differ by employer but all offer confidential counselling and referral services at no cost. The service is usually open to anyone who identifies as being part of the employee’s household – not just immediate family members.

Your EFAP can be reached by telephone. Some programs also offer services by online chat or email as well. Phone operators are able to connect you with telephone crisis counselling at any time of day. Your employer is never informed that you have used this service. The program member is not informed if a member of their household calls in.

Core Public Administration & other Federal Agencies

Most employers in the Core Public Administration (CPA) and Federal Agencies have contracted Health Canada to provide the EFAP. Calls to this EFAP are answered in English and French by professional counsellors, psychologists, or social workers. They are trained to provide counselling sessions by phone. They can also assist you in finding a mental healthcare professional in your community. Members of the Public Service Healthcare Program have access to $2,000 in coverage for a mental healthcare provider.

Some employers in the CPA and Federal Agencies offer an EFAP from another provider or offer a second EFAP program. These program may offer additional services to assist you with your legal, financial, and personal well-being.

PIPSC members at other employers

Most other employers offer EFAP services through Morneau Shepell, Homewood Health, or another provider. While services vary by employer and provider, they always include a confidential telephone counselling and referral service.  Many providers offer additional wellness and support services to assist you with your legal, financial, and personal well-being.
