75th ARC - Atlantic Young Professionals Committee (AYPC) Report

THE COMMITTEE

MANDATE

Provide advice to the regional executive on matters related to young professionals, increase confidence, skills, knowledge regarding the union among young professionals and mobilize young professionals to play a role in building the union for the future.

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify barriers/issues for young professionals in the Public Service and PIPSC
  • Foster relationships with like-minded groups
  • Outreach to young professionals in the workplace
  • Educate young professionals on the union and its benefits

MEETINGS

The AYPC met at:

  • Atlantic Regional Council 2017 (Charlottetown)
  • Stewards Council 2017 (Halifax)
  • PIPSC AGM 2017 (Ottawa)
  • AYPC stand-alone meeting, March 2018 (Halifax)
  • ARC 2018 (Moncton)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • AYPC members attended the PIPSC AGM, and the first Youth Symposium.
  • AYPC produced a survey directed at young professionals.
  • Wrote a column for the Atlantic Newsletter introducing the committee. This will be a recurring item.
  • Recruited a new member (Allyson) with a wealth of previous experience.
  • Took turns chairing our meetings to give everyone on the committee chairing experience.
  • Recruited a group of “Friends of the Young Professionals Committee”. If interested in receiving more information please let us know.
  • Studied Atlantic Region demographics
  • Sent members of the young professionals committee to various networking/training events. (CLC Young Workers Summit, Broadbent Institute Progress Summit, National Lobbying Day, Council of the Canadians Summit)
  • Planned an outreach event for young professionals both at ARC 2018 and Stewards Council 2018. (Stay tuned for details on this!)
  • Worked on committee branding; including logo, twitter, email etc.

FUTURE GOALS

  • Continue being productive to show the 2018 AGM that young professional committees are valuable and necessary to help engage the youth and keep the union strong for years to come.
  • Continue to provide committee members with the experience and confidence required to potentially become more involved in the union in the future. (i.e. Regional Executives, Group Executives, National Committees etc.)
  • Use survey results to understand how to best engage young professionals both via outreach events and between meetings. (social media etc.)
  • Develop a social media strategy.
  • Explore more training opportunities for young professionals.

The AYPC would like to thank the Atlantic Regional Executive and the rest of the Atlantic Region for their both their foresight and confidence in us. We truly believe that such old statements as “The Leaders of Tomorrow” and “The youth are the future” are very important slogans. We hope we have, and will continue to, make you all proud!
