2019 AFS AGM - 2019 ATLANTIC REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE REPORT
Consultation – I continue to participate in various ad hoc meetings and conference calls with the former AC Ainslea Cardinal to address issues as they arise. RUMC was held Jan 9 2019. Dates for the next RUMC have been proposed for mid-June. I have been actively participating on the regional Employment Equity and Diversity Committee, and am happy to report the regions UMA committee has resumed meeting. I did meet briefly with the new AC Susan Chambers and look forward to continuing the union and managements positive relationship.
Atlantic Stewards Council – I was very pleased to see that time was allocated for AFS Executive representatives to meet with their stewards during the council agenda and thankful that AFS CS Regional Representative- Emmanuel Costain was able to join in the presentation. This year we were fortunate to have the Assistant Commissioner and Director of Programs join in our discussion on regional priorities and have a chance to hear concerns directly from our stewards. The Breakout sessions are invaluable and provided the opportunity to hear concerns directly from the stewards, as well as an opportunity raise awareness of national issues. The feedback around these events has always been positive and we will continue to encourage the region to make this time available in the future.
Sub-Group Visits – This year through AGM’s, information sessions, lunch and learns. I was fortunate enough to visit most of our Atlantic Sub-Groups. As always it’s an enjoyable experience to here members concerns and answer their questions.
Bargaining – My hope that this round would be quicker and the employer would come to the table prepared and with a mandate has been unfortunately not realized. The legislation passed by the Harper Government requiring CRA to get its mandate and continually recheck its mandate from Treasury Board has tied the hands of CRA as a separate employer and its ability to negotiate. I’m hopeful we can work through this in a timely fashion, but am afraid the impending federal election will bring all efforts to a standstill.
Thanks to all Sub-Group Presidents and stewards in the Atlantic Region for their continued dedication and hard work on behalf of members.
