Two PIPSC Gold Medal recipients were also Nobel Prize laureates: Dr. G.H. Khorana (1960 Gold Medal; 1969 Nobel Prize –Medicine) andDr. Gerhard Herzberg (1969 Gold Medal; 1971 Nobel Prize –Chemistry).

CS Group on strike –the first legal strike by PIPSC members –in 1991. During the first week of September 1991, a Canada-wide strike by public service employees severely hampered government operations. Both the CS Group and the Auditors Group were in a legal strike position and joined the picket lines.

On November 15, 1967, the PIPSC Home Economists (HE) Group was the first professional group to be professional group to be certified for collective bargaining in the public service.

Pay EquityPIPSC supported a landmark eight-year pay equity battle that, on July 3, 2012, resulted in approximately 1,000 health professionals being awarded a milestone $150 million settlement. That’s just one example of the Institute’s commitment to promoting and ensuring pay equity among public service professionals. (Gary Corbett was PIPSC President.)

8 - During Jean Chrétien’s term as Prime Minister, PIPSC members organized a demonstration on September 4, 2001. “Stop the double standard now!” That’s the message PIPSC President Steve Hindle delivered to Treasury Board President Lucienne Robillard. The PIPSC President was attending a rally organized by angry and frustrated members who, despite their efforts, had yet to conclude a collective agreement.

The Institute’s tradition of awarding scholarships began in 1999 with a generous endowment by the Commerce Group to form a scholarship fund.

First Professional Institute office building, March 1964. Frances Goodspeed chaired a committee that produced a master 25-year plan for Institute offices. This plan resulted in the construction of the first-ever Institute owned office building at 786 Bronson Avenue, Ottawa.
