Daniel Shih-Ho Shen
Dear fellow IT members,
I am humbly seeking your support to elect me as a member at large of the IT Group executive. With a proven track record, I have demonstrated professionalism, passion, and a commitment to bring positive changes towards the organizations that I worked for. Having worked across three diverse departments - Health Canada (HC), Agriculture Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), and Employment Social Development Canada (ESDC) - has given me a broader understanding of the dynamics within the different work environments and the complexities of managing grievances within.
My journey with union work has been rewarding and also challenging at times. Below is a brief overview of my union involvement over the past decade, where I have honed my leadership skills and contributed to advancing the interests of our members:
- Active Steward (10 years, 2015-Present)
- Executive, IT Ottawa West Subgroup (9 years, 2016-Present)
- Treasurer, IT Ottawa West Subgroup (1 year, 2016)
- Communication Officer, IT Ottawa West Subgroup (1 year, 2017)
- Executive, Ottawa West Branch (3 years, 2022-Present)
- President, IT Ottawa West Subgroup (6 years, 2019-Present)
- Communication Lead, ESDC Consultation Team (1 year, 2024-Present)
The following are my three key approaches towards the role.
Member first = Be there, listen and take action!
By working side by side with members, I identify what matters most to them in the issue and provide the best advice based on my experience. I not only show compassion for their situations, but also take swift action to provide or find support they need. Understanding members’ needs and ensuring member dues are utilized where needed the most.
Collaboration = Teamwork makes the dream work!
As the president of the second largest Subgroup under IT Group, I have learned many valuable lessons throughout the different transitions of the constituent body. I truly believe that teamwork is the key to success. I stay open minded, respectful, and work with criticism to better myself in all challenges. I take time to understand one’s strengths and maximize the values that can be brought to the team.
Engagement = Stay connected!
As we’re moving into the new era with artificial intelligence, a new focus on work-life balance, innovative ideas are needed to adapt to these new challenges we face with the dispersed relationship among us. Effective decision making, timely execution, and transparent communication enhance a sense of connection and minimize information silos.
As an elected IT Group executive, I will dedicate myself to the following areas:
- IT Collective Bargaining
- TBS co-managed IT Training and Development Fund Utilization
- Contracting Out and potential Artificial Intelligence job influence
- IT member issues associated with Work Force Adjustment or Return to Office
- Visible minority and systemic discrimination
