The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, a national union representing over 70,000 professionals and scientists throughout Canada, requires a Political Action and Engagement Senior Officer for a 24-month term for its National Office in Ottawa.

What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the direction of the Director, Public Affairs and the functional guidance of the Political Action and Engagement Team Lead, the Senior Political Action and Engagement Officer is responsible for proposing, developing, and carrying out mobilization and recruitment activities and content in support of national and regional campaigns and events, collective bargaining, and membership recruitment.
This position requires a deep understanding of political landscapes, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. The Senior Officer will work closely with internal teams and external partners to advance the organization's goals through targeted political action and engagement.
Primary responsibilities:
- Develop strategies and plan and coordinate mobilization and organizing activities for the Institute and its constituent bodies.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop comprehensive political strategies aligned with the Institute goals. Stay updated on political developments, trends, and legislation affecting the Institute's mission.
- Identify strategies and propose target locations for mobilization meetings, activities, organizing campaigns and job actions.
- Identify opportunities to build strategic alliances with like-minded organizations, coalitions, and community groups. Collaborate on joint advocacy efforts to maximize impact and leverage resources.
- Develop and implement strategies to engage grassroots supporters in advocacy efforts. Coordinate grassroots activities such as letter-writing campaigns, phone banks, rallies, and lobby days to amplify the Institute’s influence.
- Determine appropriate tools, tactics and approaches to implement approved strategies.
- Coordinate and advise staff, stewards and elected officials in the delivery of mobilization campaigns. Liaise and work with regional staff to coordinate engagement efforts.
- Ensure that all collective bargaining activities are integrated into mobilization and recruitment efforts to augment engagement/organizing activities undertaken by negotiators.
- Conceptualize content and oversee/participate in its creation and dissemination in collaboration with other internal stakeholders including development and production of web-based, print, e-mail and other communication materials.
- Provide technical advice and support to internal/external clients.
- Compile and prepare reports and make recommendations for future mobilization and recruitment activities.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
Knowledge and Experience Requirements
Education / Experience:
- Completion of a university degree, or equivalent, in labour relations or a related discipline
- At least five (5) years of recent experience as a mobilizer/recruiter, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language requirement:
- Fluency in both French and English is an asset
Skills and experience required:
- A thorough knowledge of the authorities governing employer / employee relations in the federal public service of Canada and other jurisdictions in which Institute members are employed, particularly as legislation relates to collective bargaining
- A thorough understanding of the operations of the Professional Institute as they relate to the provision of collective bargaining and representational services to members.
- Ability to organize and develop activities for engagement of members and organizing of new members
- Ability to formulate political action and engagement strategies, including legal action, and provide related advice to bargaining teams and members
- Ability to formulate organizing strategies.
- Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, to prepare reports, newsletters, and correspondence on mobilization issues and strategies
- Ability to liaise with internal/external clients
Compensation Package
- Salary Range: $96,587 to $120,734 (G6)

- Paid time off from December 27th to 31st

Preference will be granted in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the IAM local 3011 bargaining unit.
