September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day!

Dear colleagues and friends,

On September 10, communities across Canada and worldwide come together to raise awareness and recognize the importance of World Suicide Prevention Day. Statistics show that more than 4,000 Canadians die by it every year. While no one is immune to suicide, Indigenous Peoples, men, and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ are at a higher risk and experience higher rates of suicide in Canada.

Although this portrait may seem grim, there is hope! Suicide can be prevented. It depends on our ability to recognize people who may be at risk and taking timely action. Warning signs can include:

  • withdrawal from activities
  • disconnection from loved ones
  • feelings of hopelessness
  • lack of purpose and motivation

If you are dealing with thoughts of suicide, or are worried about someone else, please contact the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline as soon as possible. You can also consult the resources on suicide available on ECCC’s Mental Health & Wellness Centre or visit the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention website to learn more about suicide and its support services.

You can use the Employee Assistance Program at any time if you are looking for counselling support. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Let’s foster a culture of care by ensuring our workplace is psychologically healthy and safe.

Stay safe, stay well!

Respectfully,

Waheed Khan
