Katherine McMillan

Hello!

I am Katherine (Katie) McMillan. I am experienced in technical roles, including being an organization representative for technical audits, and have worked for the federal government for two different departments (Health Canada and Shared Services Canada). In addition to this experience, I have worked for standards organizations (ex. CIHI), local government, crown corporations, non-profits (ex. hospitals), and in the private sector (ex. Snap360).  Having said this, I still have a lot of growing to do, and would like this growth to be harnessed by PIPSC. I have not been unionized prior to joining PIPSC at SSC, and have done this because I really respect the experience, expertise, and voice of this influential union.

Recently, I have had the opportunity to read and understand our Collective Agreement, and I think that this experience would be invaluable in this role.  My goals would not just include understanding and using the Collective Agreement, but helping to spread awareness about our union and agreement. I want all PIPSC members to know how well represented we are. I also want to address some common misinterpretations/misunderstandings in this role.

We are a collective, technical group with a shared mission, and that’s what I do best. I bring over ten years’ experience working with open source software where the ability to work as a collective is crucial.  This experience has propelled me in the areas of project management, human resources, non-human resources, working with the legal system, teamwork, contracting, CI/CD and stakeholder engagement. I am experienced working with team methods, tools, and frameworks including Lean, Agile, and Kaizen. There is no “I” in network, or in team, but there are e’s in both, and I definitely see myself as part of the “e-”generation. “E” as in emerging, and I appreciate your support in helping me to e-merge!
