2019 AFS AGM - Official Languages Committee 2018 Report

The Official Languages Committee was created in 2015 to respond to official languages issues.

There are no meetings planned with the employer at the national level with regard to official languages. Meetings with the employer take place at the regional level. We were consulted when the employer’s national policies on official languages were being amended.

The Committee is available to answer questions from members on issues involving official languages and has already responded to a number of them from AFS members.

One issue that often comes up concerns staffing. In the case of bilingual or unilingual staffing, managers must justify their decision. The number of English and French files to be dealt with and the number of francophone, anglophone and bilingual employees are relevant factors to take into account when making the decision.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

I would like to thank Manny Costain, who works with me on the Committee.

Thank you.
