Atlantic Regional Representative Report

Prepared by David Chu
June 3, 2019

We currently have three (3) subgroups in our region: Fredericton, Moncton and St. John’s. There is potential to form subgroups in Sydney, NS and Charlottetown, PE. Members have shown interest in revitalizing the Halifax subgroup. In terms of membership, we have over 500 members in our Region (second to the National Capital Region).

PIPSC National conducted a Special General Meeting, Elections and Bargaining Update on October 17 for the Halifax subgroup. All PIPSC AV Halifax subgroup members (AU, CO and PG) were invited to attend and participate in the meeting. The Special General Meeting was to implement the subgroup constitution that passed at the March 29, 2018 Halifax Subgroup AGM, in accordance with By-Law Article 4.1:

4.1 All Regular and Retired members (unless specified elsewhere in these Bylaws) shall be eligible to nominate members for positions on the Group Executive, propose amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws of the Group, and vote in Group affairs. Only Regular members shall be eligible to hold office.

There was no nominations for the positions of the President, Vice-President, and up to five Members-at-Large. A call out letter has been sent by the AV Group Vice-President / Subgroup Coordinator to Halifax subgroup members to engage at least five regular members who are interested to participate and lead this subgroup executive prior to the AV Group National Executive making a recommendation to the PIPSC National Executive Committee to dissolve this subgroup.

Activities for this past year of 2018 was delivering events as part of the “Do Better” campaign, responding to member inquiries and trying to get more AV representation in this region,. AV interest was shown at the Atlantic Regional Council in Moncton and the Steward Council in Halifax. We now have AV representation in all Atlantic Provinces. Recruiting more stewards will be a priority going forward.

In an effort to increase visibility in the Atlantic Region, I will be delivering information sessions and /or attending subgroup AGMs to provide updates on issues that affect our membership.

I attended the Halifax DND Branch AGM in November, Halifax Branch AGM in December and would be available to attend other Regional Branch and subgroup AGMs upon member’s request.
