SP 2019 AGM - Subgroup Report

SP Subgroup Report - 2019 AGM

The Subgroups of the Applied Science and Patent Examination Group (SP) are continuing to provide a vital link between members in their workplace and the SP Executive Committee. Networking is a critical tool for this community of 9 different occupational groups which together represent the third largest Bargaining Group in PIPSC. In 2018 the Presidents meeting returned to a standalone national format. The standalone meeting was held in Vancouver. As in previous years an invitation was extended to the local executives and stewards in the city. This allowed members that would not have normally attended a Presidents meeting to participate in national discussions.

Status of Sub-groups

Presently there are 29 active Subgroups in the Applied Science and Patent Examination Group across Canada. The break down of the subgroups in the regions are as follows; 6 in the Atlantic, 5 in the BC Yukon, 3 in the NCR, 4 in Ontario, 7 in the Prairie Northwest Territories and 4 in Quebec.

Communication with Sub-groups

Overall the standalone Presidents Meeting was a success. For the next session of the Presidents Meeting, the presidents have agreed to a modified regional structure to deal with regional subgroup issues. These zonal meetings will see the BC Yukon and Prairie Northwest Territories Regions combined into One Western Zonal President’s meeting to be held in Winnipeg. The NCR and Ontario Region will be combined into a Central Zonal President’s meeting to be held in Niagara Falls. And the Quebec and Atlantic Regions will be combined into the Eastern Zonal President’s meeting to be held in St John’s.

Conference calls will continue to be organized to discuss issues related to bargaining and Group Exec Meetings. The President and SG Coordinator will also continue to visit as many Sub-Groups as possible.
