AV - North Central Vancouver Subgroup Report May 2018

Greetings from AV North Central Vancouver Island (NCVI) Subgroup.  Our sub-group is officially one year old and the executive has been quite busy in the past year building our strength through a series of information meetings, most of them focussed on the recent contract that was signed and the issues associated with Phoenix.  We recently held our AGM (February 7, 2018) that was attended by six of our members and a guest appearance by Jean Labarge, AV group executive BC/YK regional rep.  Jean gave us an update on AV meetings that recently occurred in Ottawa.  The one year term for the Vice President/Secretary, filled by Monica Walker, expired.  Monica declined to stand again but agreed to continue in the role until a replacement is elected.  Bernie Taekema gave the president’s report highlighting the work the subgroup had done in the past year.  There was also a discussion on sick leave and a recommendation that the AV group or PIPSC survey membership on their opinions on sick leave prior to contract negotiations starting.

Activities in the past year included a meeting in July to debrief on the recent contract that was signed, a breakfast meeting in early December where Dan Leus, PIPSC steward, gave a brief summary on the recent PIPSC  AGM and highlighted the union’s involvement in resolving the Phoenix pay system and the AGM mentioned above.  We also sent out a Survey Monkey asking our subgroup membership to identify if they were having issues with Phoenix and if they wanted help from the union.

We have a total of 17 AV union members in the NCVI subgroup up from 13 the previous year.

On behalf of the Subgroup Executive,

Bernie Taekema

President
