National AV Group Update

Bernie Taekema and Jennifer Mollins attended national AV group meetings in Ottawa in June.  Some highlights:

  • Some highlights include:
    • The AV AGM’s theme was encouraging participation from young professionals;
    • classification comparisons between ECs and COs;
    • funds available for AV subgroup activities;
    • Bylaw amendments included approving the change of the name of the AV group to ACP (Accounting, Commerce and Purchasing) group in 2018;
    • Stewards are vitally important to support members.

AV Contract Updates

  • Our April 28, 2018 AV contract is in force and back-pay is being paid out. Be sure to follow up on any pay issues related to the contract after the implementation period ends on August 26th.
  • The new AV contract changes the definition of family, so family-related leave may now be taken if you need to care for family members who are not living with you.
  • There will be a call for AV members to work on developing support measures agreed upon in the Memorandum of Agreement in our contract for domestic violence victims (Appendix B).
  • Full AV contract is available here.
  • PIPSC, PSAC, CAPE and TBS are working to negotiate new sick leave terms.
  • Bargaining for our next contract to start in 2018, and there will be a call for interest in the spring.
  • Jennifer Mollins will be attending the AV group bargaining post-mortem on July 15th.  Members are invited to bring forward any concerns that they would like shared at this meeting.
  • Jennifer Mollins to attend the national PIPSC AGM on November 17th, and can initiate bylaw or policy changes.  Resolutions due 12 weeks prior to meeting, or August 25.  If you have ideas, please let the executive know.

Other Business

As a follow-up to the national AV group discussion local NCVI members were encouraged to become stewards and to contact the AV North Central Vancouver Island (NCVI) Subgroup executive for more information on becoming a steward.  The steward training session is November 23rd-25th in Vancouver.  If you are interested in learning about your rights and responsibilities as a PIPSC member, steward training is an excellent place to start.
