1. Call to Order

  • Meeting called to order at 5:50 PM

 

2. Approval of the agenda

3. Business arising from the Minutes

  • Motion to approve minutes from October 29th meeting. M/S/C

 

4. Appointment of Executive Members

  • Noted that roles on the executive team will be filled as follows for the next year
    • President: Tanya Evans
    • Vice-President: Bryan Chen
    • Secretary: Philip Bartha
    • Treasurer: Tim Powers
    • Members-at-Large: Lindsay Howes, Lola Bryson, Marianne Quat
  • Noted that there is still a spot open for an additional executive member
  • Being no further nominations, the above nomination was accepted by acclamation. M/S/C
     
  • ACTION: Philip to update executive team contact information on PIPSC Website
  • ACTION: Bryan to create a WhatsApp group chat for executive team communications

 

5. President’s Report

  • Role of Sub Group executive was discussed, including the importance of soliciting information from members about their concerns and interests, sharing national and regional updates, and informing members of helpful resources and encouraging them to be active in the union.

6. Treasurer’s Report (Tim)

  • Tim provided an update on financial status of the Sub Group
  • Importance of having executive members attend meetings in-person to allow for cheques to be signed / reimbursement to occur

7. National and Regional Updates

  • PIPSC National AGM
    • Updates on key votes shared, including approval to increase strike pay, lower the number of in-person attendees at future AGMs, higher base funding for individual Sub Groups
    • March on Parliament was held to demonstrate against cuts to public service
    • Members encouraged to reach out to members of parliament to voice concerns about cuts to public services and potential impacts
    • National SP AGM being planned for April (can contact Annie Debe if interested)

 

  • Regional Updates
    • Upcoming Meet and Greet event with BC/Y Regional Executive in North Vancouver (February 2nd @ 5 PM, Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier)
       
  • National Updates
    • Bargaining Conference occurred the weekend of January 16th. Initial results of survey were shared. Plans for further discussion on how to consider implications of results during next round of bargaining.

 

8. Vancouver SP Sub Group 2025 Plans and Activities

  • Brief debrief on activities from 2025, including lessons learned from past activities (including having a family friendly environment) and potential venues for future activities (including Café Marie)
     

9. Vancouver SP Sub Group 2026 Plans and Activities

  • Sub Group supports spending up to $500 for members of other Sub Groups to attend future executive team meetings (including meals and travel) to assist with planning future events. M/S/C
     
  • Bryan indicated plans for regional virtual trivia night on Discord (Feb 19 @ 6:30 PM)
     
  • Plans underway with 401 Burrard SG to hold Lunch & Learn (L&L) event on February 17 to discuss Workforce Adjustment and Bargaining (virtual option available)
    • L&L w/ Bryan Van Wilgenburg (SP President) @ 401 Burrard (12 – 1 PM)
    • Meet and Greet w/ Bryan from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM (Location TBD)
    • SP Vancouver Sub Group supports spending up to $1500 to go towards the event. M/S/C
    • ACTION: Executive team members encouraged to spread awareness about the event in their workplace.
       
  • Discussion held on other potential activities for 2026, including collaborations with other Sub Groups, Region, YPC (e.g. Pickleball, Dine-Outs, Beach Clean-Ups), Lunch and Learns, Curling, Labour Day, Pride, Public Service Appreciation week
    • ACTION: Executive team members encouraged to think of restaurant ideas for potential dine-outs.
       
  • Potential to invite Sub Group members as guests to future executive team meetings as observers
     
  • Branch has funds that Sub Groups could potentially access to support with planning events
     
  • Executive team briefly discussed ideas about where and when to host our next AGM. Preference to have location for next AGM outside of downtown Vancouver, given that AGM was held in downtown Vancouver.
    • ACTION: Executive team to brainstorm ideas for AGM and discuss them at the next executive team meeting (costs, venues, timing, etc.).
       

10. Other Business

  • ACTION: Executive members encouraged to think of ideas for visibility items
  • ACTION: Executive members encouraged to think about ways to improve outreach to members, including participating in SP active chat groups
  • Sub Group looking into ways to potentially change the current name of the Sub Group (SP Vancouver) so that it is more representative of the geographic extent of its membership. Various ideas suggested for how to implement a potential name change and solicit input from membership.
    • ACTION: Executive members to discuss ideas and process for renaming the Sub Group further via WhatsApp.


11. Location and preferred dates of next meeting

  • Next meeting tentatively set for February 23 @ 6 PM
  • Location TBD, planned to be in the Burnaby area
  • ACTION: Philip to look into locations for next executive meeting
