PIPSC Gander Branch Annual General Meeting Minutes

Meeting commenced at 19:05 NST and was chaired by Daniel MacKenzie.

  1. Approval of Agenda

Motion to accept agenda by Jubainville and seconded by White.  Motion Carried.   

 

  1. Adoption of September 27th, 2021 AGM Meeting Minutes

Motion to accept the minutes by MacKenzie and seconded by Neil. Motion Carried.   

 

  1. Outstanding Business from Minutes 

There were no outstanding action items from the minutes.

 

  1. Report of the President  (Link to President's Report is here)
  • MacKenzie thanked everyone for the opportunity to be President the past year 
  • Talked about membership; we have 85 regular members and 2 rands in Corner Brook
  • Listed the stewards in our branch as well as the two new stewards in waiting
  • Discussed past and upcoming training 
  • Briefly talked about the past Atlantic Regional Council and the one scheduled for next spring as well as some of the topics covered at that meeting 

 

Motion to accept report by Neil and seconded by Jubainville.  Motion Carried.  Report Adopted.  


 

  1. 2022 Atlantic Regional Council Report 

MacKenzie gave a report on the ARC that he and Devon Telford attended May 26th to 27th in Halifax.    

  • Discussed a mock AGM floor session they did for practice to give people an idea of the process
  • Briefed on the business session which included a president's report, financial report and other typical items
  • Talked about grievances that have arisen from the past year 
  • Mentioned there was a report given by the vice president
  • Discussed resolutions the atlantic region were putting forward for the PIPSC AGM 
  • Mentioned that there were various other interesting presentations 

 

Motion to accept report by White and seconded by Batten.  Motion Carried.  Report Adopted.

  

  1. 2022 Annual General Meeting 

Jubainville gave a report on the AGM that he attended Nov 18th to 19th in Montréal.    

  • Was held in Montréal and will be for future events for its ability to hold the large capacity of attendees
  • First morning consisted of business items
  • Talked about some of the resolutions that were presented, some of which passes others were voted down
    • Professionals Canada – voted down a few agm’s ago but was discussed
    • Project limit of $500 000 without AGM approval – approved however $1 000 000 was voted down
    • One time welcome back funding for union events – voted down
    • Faster concur travel reimbursements – approved 
    • SP owning a permanent seat on the science council – voted down
    • Ban on single use plastics for PIPSC meetings and events – approved
  • Discussed the plans to make the AGM a larger event and more like a conference with training and presentation days added     

 

Motion to accept report by MacKenzie and seconded by Batten.  Motion Carried.  Report Adopted.

 

  1. Branch Executive Meetings

MacKenzie summarized the Branch executive meetings.

  1. Branch Activities and Events

MacKenzie summarized the events put off or attempted by the branch.

  • December 2021: Gander Holiday Wine and Cheese – coordinated with sub group; 20 people attended 
  • December 2021: Corner Brook Holiday Brunch – canceled for covid
  • June 2022: Gander Axe Throwing – coordinated with sub group; 13 people attended; 
  • Spring 2022: Corner Brook – offered money to coincide with the axe throwing but nothing got off the ground 
  • August 2022: Gander Cobbs Pond BBQ – canceled for lack of time to organize
  • October 2022: Gander Halloween Bowling – coordinated with sub group;  16 people attended
  • November 2022: Corner Brook Bowling – 12 people attended 
  • November 2022: Gander Holiday Wine and Cheese – coordinated with sub group; 20 people attended  
  • December 2022: Corner Brook Holiday Brunch –11 people attended

 

The group also discussed other possible future events as well as a possible supper “lunch and learn” in January 2023 to relay all this information to members that could not attend the AGM on such short notice.         

 

10. Financial Report 

Juliana Paul presented the 2021 financial report for the branch as well as providing details about our current (2022) financial health.  She also presented the proposed budget for the 2023 financial year.   

Motion to accept the Financial Report by MacKenzie and seconded by White.  Motion Carried.   

 

11. New Business

  • White wanted to let everyone know about the simple process to get a PIPSC email account for anyone interested.  
  • Jubainville mentioned that he met a steward at the AGM who lives on the Bonavista peninsula but is affiliated with the St. John’s branch.  He will follow up to ensure this member is in the correct region.

A) President – 2 year term

Daniel MacKenzie won by acclamation.

B) Secretary  - 2 year term

Wanda Batten won by acclamation.

 

13. Adjournment 

MacKenzie thanked everyone for attending and moved to adjourn the meeting.  White seconded.  Motion Carried.  The meeting adjourned at 20:51 NST.
