Join us for a screening of Indian Horse, based on Richard Wagamese’s acclaimed novel.

The film follows Saul Indian Horse, an Ojibway boy who survives the physical and cultural trauma of a Catholic residential school in 1950s Ontario. His extraordinary talent for hockey offers him a temporary escape, but he ultimately must confront systemic racism and the lasting effects of childhood abuse through a journey of recovery and cultural reconnection.

Held in the lead-up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, this screening offers an opportunity for reflection and learning about the residential school system, its enduring legacy, and the resilience of Indigenous peoples and communities.

Join your union family at Ottawa’s historic Mayfair Theatre, one of Canada’s oldest surviving independent movie houses. This is an opportunity to connect with fellow members, deepen your understanding of Indigenous and labour history, and reflect on truth, reconciliation and solidarity.

The film will be screened in English and introduced by Greg Scriver, Vice-Chair of the NCR Region Executive. Greg is proudly Indigenous, a Mohawk from Kahnawà:ke and a member of the Turtle Clan.  

Popcorn will be provided. Additional food and drinks are available for purchase at the concession stand.
