The first Monday in September, Labour Day is a holiday meant to honour and recognize the Canadian labour movement and the works and contributions of labourers to the development and achievements in Canada.

It may surprise you to find out that the origins of Labour Day were actually in Hamilton and Toronto!

One of the first major labour victories in Canada was a result of the 1872 strike by the Toronto Typographical Union who were fighting to reduce their hours to 9 hours per day. This strike started in Hamilton and then Toronto and led the charge for the Nine Hour Movement.

Following the strike an annual labour festival was held in Toronto, and then later in the U.S.

With growing public support, Prime Minister John Thompson passed legislation to declare Labour Day a national holiday on July 23, 1894.
