Dear Sub-Group Members,

With summer upon us, your Sub-Group Executive has been busy developing new ways to engage potential members and strengthen support for the union.

The development of a new bylaw and the sharing of activity costs with Branch members have resulted in a wide range of events planned over the coming months.

We encourage you to take some time to get involved in union activities and take the opportunity to meet new friends and colleagues.

David A. Young
NR NRCan Sub-Group President

New PIPSC By-law Defines the Young Professional Liaison Role

At the April 16, 2026, NRCan Sub‑Group AGM, Katrin Staneva, Research Engineer at NRCan and member of the NR Sub‑Group Executive, introduced the newly defined Young Professional Liaison (YPL) role. This position was formally approved by the PIPSC national by‑law office and is now part of the NR Sub‑Group Executive structure. This achievement stands as a major step forward, and the NR NRCan Sub‑Group is proud to have been the driving force behind the first bylaw change of its kind. The bylaw can be found following this link: https://aws-pipsc-prod-pipscmain-static.s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/app/uploads/Bylaws-NR-NRCan-NCR-SubGroup-BOD-10Dec2025-.pdf

The YPL serves as the primary connector between young professionals—engineers, architects, and land surveyors—and the broader union membership. The role strengthens communication, supports engagement, and ensures that issues raised by the PIPSC NCR Young Professional Network (YPN) are represented at the NR Executive table.

The YPL also helps plan and deliver events that build community, visibility, and professional development opportunities for early‑career members.

The YPL works closely with the NCR‑YPN, whose objectives include identifying barriers faced by young professionals, raising issues unique to early‑career public servants, fostering relationships with like‑minded groups, and increasing outreach in the workplace. Through this partnership, the YPL helps bring YPN discussions into union decision‑making while supporting activities that strengthen young professional involvement.

With the Young Professional Liaison role being officially defined in the PIPSC national by-law, the objective is to have this role spread across other NR sub-group executives to ensure young professional voices are heard and to increase their engagement in PIPSC activities.

As a way to introduce the YPL, there are upcoming initiatives planned. The two major events that we will host this year are made to promote engagement and connection. These are the The Great Canadian Workplace Race, which will be a team‑based challenge inspired by Canadian culture, innovation, and values, designed to encourage collaboration and creativity. The second event is a Keynote Speaker Event, featuring a leader from Canada’s tech, clean‑energy, or social‑innovation sectors to inspire employees and highlight emerging national priorities. These events aim to build community, spark conversation, and give members a platform to share feedback that will help shape future bargaining priorities.
