PIPSC Victoria Branch – 2018 Annual General Meeting and Elections

Location:  Gorge Vale Golf Club, 1005 Craigflower Road, Victoria, BC

The meeting began at 5:20 p.m.

Opening remarks/welcome by Victoria Branch President, Adele McLean.  Adele, on behalf of the executive, acknowledged that the AGM was being held on unceded Coast Salish Territories, specifically of the Lekwungen and the WSÁNEĆ peoples and welcomed, thanked and acknowledged with appreciation all members and guests attending the evening.

Adele then introduced other members of the Branch Executive:  Morgan Cranny, Vice-President (interim internal appointment to fill vacancy), Christine Cress, Treasurer (interim internal appointment to fill vacancy); Alfred Lyon, Secretary; Carmen So,  Member-at-Large (MAL), Lauren Cimarosti, (MAL); Pete Wills, (MAL), Efrain Andia Rodrigues (MAL) and Linh Ho (MAL).

Adele also reviewed events and activities hosted by the Branch during the past year (e.g.  Last Jedi family movie event, summer BBQ, and Fireside Chat with President Daviau together with subsequent Steward appreciation night).  Unfortunately no suitable movies for another morning movie in December have been identified for this year but a similar family-oriented event is planned possibly for end of year (December) or early 2019.

Regarding elections, Adele mentioned that there were five executive positions up for election (President, Secretary and 3 MAL) and that there would be three call outs for nominations prior to the election.

New Business 

Adele asked for acceptance of the 2018 AGM Agenda – Moved:  Angela Cowie; Seconded: Curtis Hamilton - Carried.

Adele also asked for acceptance of the 2017 Branch AGM Minutes.  Moved: Cyn Craig; Seconded:  Efrain Andia Rodrigues - Carried.

Adele then issued the first call out for nominations from the floor.  Adele was nominated for President and Tom Percy was nominated for MAL, respectively, and accepted the nominations.

Financial Report

Adele asked Christine to present the Branch Financial Report.  Christine reviewed major expenditures during the year, answered members’ questions and asked for acceptance of the Financial Report.    Moved:  Angela Cowie; Seconded:  Morgan Cranny - Carried.

Following the financial report Adele announced the second call for nominations.

Angela Cowie was nominated Secretary while Curtis Hamilton, Robert Price and Helene Cobanter were nominated for MAL positions.  All accepted their nominations.

Adele then introduced Robert MacDonald, Regional Director - PIPSC BC/Yukon Region as the Guest Speaker.

Guest Speakers 

Regional Director, Rob MacDonald: Robert acknowledged Victoria Branch member Liz Oliphant as a new B.C. /Yukon Regional Council executive then highlighted problems with Phoenix arising from the Federal Government contracting out policy together with PIPSC advocacy, policy grievances, loans and other initiatives to mitigate negative consequences for members from this fiasco.  He reminded AGM attendees how close all public servants came to losing the current sick leave benefit regime and consequently the importance of increasing efforts to talk to their colleagues, friends and neighbours about the essential work that PIPSC members do in light of the upcoming Federal election.  Robert also encouraged Branch members to carefully consider the platforms of candidates in the PIPSC 2018 elections and take the time to vote.

Election for executive positions 

Adele issued the third and final call for nominations.

There being no further nominations, Adele announced the close of nominations.

Results of the elections are as follows:  Adele McLean, President, (acclaimed); Angela Cowie, Secretary (acclaimed); Tom Percy, MAL; Curtis Hamilton, MAL, and Robert Price, MAL.  Terms of office for all five positions end in 2021.

Adele thanked everyone for attending the AGM and asked if there were any other questions or business to be conducted.  There being none, the meeting portion of the AGM was adjourned.

2018 Victoria Branch AGM (meeting potion) adjourned at 6:15pm.  Dinner followed.
