MINUTES - PIPSC North Central Vancouver Island Branch Executive Committee Meeting, October 11, 2017

Summary of action items arising from today’s meeting

  1. NL to send information around on event next week Wednesday to protest Phoenix by PSAC
  2. Fund pizza up to $150 for Wednesday protest of Phoenix, NL to coordinate (M/S JM, CC)
  3. JM trying to buy pinnies but not available in blue, will try to special order. CC will look into other suppliers.
  4. JM to survey exec for sizes and interest and buy up to 8 PIPSC polo shirts for NCVI executive to wear at events, $240 for shirts, up to $50 for embroidery (M/S JM, NL)
  5. JM to buy 15 umbrellas and whistles for rally toolkit, up to $350 - first ask Better Together if they have any of these to send over for free
  6. CC to ask Deb Daviau to speak at our AGM on May 2 or 16, and invite Rob MacDonald
  7. JM/NL to consider science speakers for AGM.
  8. JM to ask about VIU venue availability.
  9. Next meeting, consider buying swag for our AGM.
  10. JM to plan movie for Nanaimo in January, maybe Star Wars,
  11. JM to request $2500 from Better Together for Nanaimo movie event.
  12. JM to move up Treasurer’s report earlier in agenda for next meeting
  13. JM to follow up on the bylaw changes review.
  14. CC to share calendar with all executive members
  15. TL - Budget for 2018 will be prepared for next meeting
  16. CC to take issue of members who transfer in from military being considered as group 2 pension, when service started prior to 2012 to both Rob MacDonald and to PIPSC VP Steve Hindle and to joint consultations table.
  17. CC to find out if branch executive training will be offered in December 2017
  18. Next executive meeting: late November 2017 and late February 2018. JM will send out survey to pick dates
  19. Next meeting, review bylaws for changes to propose to branch AGM.

4. Business arising from previous Executive meeting

  • Phoenix update (all): PIPSC has filed two policy grievances as 2 collective agreements were not paid backpay within agreed to timeline, some members avoiding promotions or acting due to pay issues, someone has been transferred to DND and is still getting 15 days leave per year instead of her 30 days per year allocation. there is Phoenix court case in the Yukon,
  • ACTION: NL to send information around on event next week Wednesday to protest Phoenix by PSAC
    • MOTION: Fund pizza up to $150 for Wednesday protest of Phoenix, NL to coordinate (M/S JM, CC)
  • Attracting members to become active
    • Last meetings motion to buy rally toolkit with reusable visibility items proposal – 50 pinnies $600: JM trying to buy pinnies but not available in blue, will try to special order. CC will look into other suppliers.
    • MOTION: Buy 8 PIPSC polo shirts for NCVI executive to wear at events, $240 for shirts, up to $50 for embroidery (M/S JM, NL)

  • Branch bylaw changes from the May AGM are being considered at the October PIPSC BC/YK bylaws committee. ACTION: JM to follow up on the bylaw changes review.

5. Treasurer's Report

  • Financials for 2017 - no change. Balance is $1926.76. Action: Budget for 2018 will be prepared for next meeting

6. New Business

    1. MOA on supporting employees who are victims of domestic violence underway (AV group lead)

7. Roundtable

  • Members who transfer from military service to the public service need to work until 60 for an unreduced pension, even if have already worked 35 years. ACTION: CC to take issue of members who transfer in from military being considered as group 2 pension, when service started prior to 2012 to both Rob MacDonald and to PIPSC VP Steve Hindle and to joint consultations table.

8. Next executive meeting: late November 2017 and late February 2018. JM will send out survey to pick date.
