International Day of Older Persons / National Seniors Day

International Day of Older Persons (United Nations) and National Seniors Day (Canada) aims to raise awareness of the impact of an aging population and the need to ensure that people can grow old with dignity and continue to participate in society as citizens with full rights. Older people make major contributions to society, through work, experience and knowledge. By 2050, 2 billion people, over 20 per cent of the world’s population, will be 60 or older. Increased attention to the needs and challenges faced by older people is required, as well as recognizing the essential contribution older men and women make to the functioning of society.

2018 Theme “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions.”

Older human rights champions probably have been around since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. They are older people advocating for human rights at the grass root and community level to high profile figures on the international stage. Everyone demands equal respect and acknowledgement for their dedication and commitment to contributing to a world free from fear and free from want. The 2018 theme aims to promote the rights enshrined in the Declaration for older persons by raising the visibility as participating members of society committed to improving the enjoyment of human rights, reflect on progress and challenges to ensure full and equal enjoyment of rights and freedoms and engage audiences across the world to mobilize people for human rights at all stages of life.
